2019 Singing Section of our Festival will take place Wednesday 20th –  Saturday 23rd November 2019.

The venue is Kings Road United Reformed Church (Previously known as Crowstone Christian Centre) 

CHOIRS
ALL CLASSES ARE OPEN TO COMPETITORS FROM ANY DISTRICT

All singers must be bona fide members of a choir at the time of entry.
In Own Choice Classes the standard of music chosen will be taken into consideration.
Costumes and recorded accompaniments ARE NOT PERMITTED.
The following overall choral awards will be made:

The Freda Parry Presentation Bowl: the most outstanding choral performance
The Claire Singers Award: the most moving choral performance
The Doreen Bowyer Children’s Choirs Prize:
for the most promising children’s choir in Classes 6, 7, 8, 9

1 PREMIER CLASS FOR CHOIRS (any combination of voices)
Total time 10 minutes.
The H. W. L. Hobbs Challenge Shield
Two contrasting pieces, one to be unaccompanied, minimum 3 parts, minimum of 12 voices. All choirs to choose one piece written or arranged by a classical composer such as, but not limited to: Mozart, Elgar, Thiman, Rutter or Chilcott.

2 MIXED VOICE CHOIRS
The Mrs. Charles Waller Choral Trophy
Two contrasting pieces to be chosen. Minimum of 12 voices. Total time 10 minutes.

3 LADIES’ CHOIRS
The Musical Council Shield
Two contrasting pieces to be chosen. Minimum of 12 voices, excluding school & youth groups. Total time 10 minutes.

4 MALE VOICE CHOIRS
The Ellis Cup
Two contrasting pieces to be chosen. Minimum of 12 voices. Total time 10 minutes.

5 COMMUNITY CHOIRS (any combination of voices)
The Lester Jones Challenge Cup
Two contrasting pieces to be chosen. Minimum of 12 voices. Total time 10 minutes.
Classes 6-11 may be mixed, boys only or girls only.

6 SCHOOL CHOIRS 18 yrs & under
The Charles Waller Silver Challenge Shield No. 1
Two contrasting pieces to be chosen. Minimum of 12 voices.

Total time 10 minutes

7 SCHOOL CHOIRS 14 yrs & under
The Samuel Riley Memorial Cup
Two contrasting pieces to be chosen. Minimum of 12 voices.

Total time 8 minutes

8 SCHOOL CHOIRS 11 yrs & under
The Charles Waller Silver Challenge Shield No. 2
Two contrasting pieces to be chosen. Minimum of 12 voices.

11 SENIOR CITIZENS’ CHOIRS (any combination of voices)
The Dorothy Ventris Trophy (Choirs)
Two contrasting pieces to be chosen. Minimum of 12 voices.

12 CHAMBER CHOIR (any combination of voices) Any age
The Joy Elliott Memorial Trophy
Two contrasting pieces to be chosen, accompanied or unaccompanied. 8 – 25 voices.

Total time 10 minutes

13 A CAPPELLA CHOIR Any age
The Dulcian Madrigal Trophy
Two contrasting pieces to be chosen. Minimum of 8 voices.

Total time 10 minutes

14 ‘BARBER SHOP’ GROUPS Any age
Any number/combination of voices.
Two contrasting pieces to be chosen.

Total time 8 minutes

DUETS & ENSEMBLES
Costumes and recorded accompaniments not permitted.

Marks for classes in this category will take into account difficulty of song, harmonic balance and blend. At least 50% of the song should be sung in harmony.

15 ENSEMBLE FOR VOICE/S & INSTRUMENT/S 18 yrs & over
Any instruments may be played instead of or as well as piano.
Max. 6 performers.

Time limit 5 minutes

16 ENSEMBLE FOR VOICE/S & INSTRUMENT/S 14 to 17 yrs
Any instruments may be played instead of or as well as piano.
Max. 6 performers.

17 VOCAL ENSEMBLE (any combination of voices, max. 7) Any age
The Pett Trophy
Own choice, excluding songs from the shows (stage or film).

18 VOCAL DUET (any combination of voices) 15 yrs & under
The Dorothy Havis Prize
Own choice, excluding songs from the shows (stage or film).

19 VOCAL DUETS (any combination of voices) At least 1 competitor to be 16 yrs or over
The Philip Leicester Parry Memorial Cup
Own choice, excluding songs from the shows (stage or film).

SOLO SINGING
ALL CLASSES ARE OPEN TO COMPETITORS FROM ANY DISTRICT
The Music Publishers Association has recently issued a revised code of practice on copying copyright works:
“When an Own Choice work is selected from a publication containing several different works and which is not published separately, one copy may be made for the use of an adjudicator at a competition or festival provided that the competitor or participant has already purchased his/her own copy and that the copy made is retained and destroyed immediately after the event. The accompanist should always be given a printed copy.”

Candidates are reminded that they should use specified editions where indicated. Songs may not be used twice. COPIES OF OWN CHOICE must be provided for the Adjudicator (failure to do so may result in a loss of marks).

TIME LIMITS must be strictly observed; candidates are reminded that spoken introductions count towards their use of the time limit.

Please note that PROMPTING from the audience is not allowed under any circumstances.
With the exception of Oratorio and Sing & Play (classes 20, 24 & 32), competitors are expected to sing from memory.

Costumes and recorded accompaniments ARE NOT PERMITTED.

The following overall awards will be made:
The Premier Trophy:
for the singer gaining the highest marks in either the Oratorio, Opera or Song Recital Classes (20, 21, 22).

Note that in these classes, only a high standard of performance and choice of music is acceptable.
The Thornton Family Shield for Entertainment:
for the most entertaining performance in the Singing Section

20 ORATORIO CLASS 18 yrs & over
The Eileen Greaves Challenge Cup
Own choice of solo from an Oratorio (sacred or secular, including Cantatas) of any period, in the original key.

21 OPERA CLASS 18 yrs & over
The Dorothy West Challenge Cup and Memorial Prize
Own choice of opera aria or concert aria, in the original key.

22 SONG RECITAL CLASS – Amateur or Professional 18 yrs & over
The Branchflower Family Challenge Cup
Competitors are required to present a recital programme of three songs/arias from 3 contrasting styles, genres and periods

Total time 12 minutes

23 OPERETTA and LIGHT OPERA 18 yrs & over
The Elizabeth Elliott Cup
Own choice of solo.

24 EMMA ELIZABETH CURTIS MEMORIAL CLASS 18 yrs & over
Challenge Cup and prize from the estate of the late John Curtis
Own choice of aria from “Elijah”, “Messiah” or “The Creation”, in the original key.

25 THE IVY WRIGHT CHALLENGE TROPHY
For Ladies’ Voices, Amateur or Professional 18 yrs & over
The Ivy Wright Memorial Prize of £50
Own choice of song, excluding Opera, Oratorio, Show Songs, Folk Songs and Modern Ballad. Standard of choice will be taken into consideration.

26 CLASSICAL ART SONG IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Duet for voice and Piano (both performers adjudicated) 18 yrs & over
The Gilberts Challenge Cup
Own choice of an International Art Song (German Lied, French Mélodie, etc) to be sung in the original language.

27 CLASSICAL ART SONG IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Singer only adjudicated. 18 yrs & over
The John Hamilton Memorial Cup and Prize
Own choice of an International Art Song (German Lied, French Mélodie, etc) to be sung in the original language.

28 SOLO SINGING “SIXTY YEARS AND OVER” 60 yrs & over
The Radford Cup
A solo for any voice, own choice of song. Amateurs only.

29 SOLO SINGING OWN CHOICE 16 yrs & over
Time limit 4 minutes
The Horace Bayliss Memorial Cup
A class for any voice (soprano, contralto, tenor or bass) to sing a song of their own choice, including British Art Songs, but excluding songs from the shows (stage or film) and modern popular ballads.

30 EARLY ENGLISH SONG 16 yrs & over
The Gwen Stephenson Challenge Trophy
Own choice of song by any 16th, 17th, or 18th Century English Composer

Time limit 4 minutes

Own choice of song, to be self-accompanied on piano or any other appropriate instrument. Any show song used should be performed with an independent accompaniment not doubling the vocal line.

33 DUET FOR ANY VOICE AND PIANOFORTE 18 yrs or under
Own choice of song originally written for voice & piano

34 JUNIOR SONG RECITAL CLASS 16 to 17 yrs
The Doreen Bowyer Song Recital Prize
Competitors are required to present a recital programme of three songs/arias from 3 contrasting styles, genres and periods.

GRADED CLASSES
Any song to be chosen from the current ABRSM Singing Syllabus – excluding Show Songs. Competitors must not have passed any grade higher than the one from which the choice is made and must not sing the piece in any other class.

40 ABRSM GRADES 1-2 Any age

Own choice of any song from the ABRSM syllabus excluding songs from the shows (stage or film).

41 ABRSM GRADES 3-4 Any age
The Kai Burton Trophy for Solo Singing
